T-Minus 20 Days: Yolo'ing a new book

The new book is not Chosen.

Instead, the preliminary title is "Jack of Clubs"

It's about a magician in Hong Kong, from Boston, an American-Asian whose travelled to the city ostensibly to get away from his family, in reality, because he found out his mother's actually his step mum, and his real mum's originally from Hong Kong.

He hustles in nightclubs and lives with a guy named Bennie, who makes a living writing Mechwarrior fan fiction through his Patreon. Jack plays poker, teaches ESL, and performs magic in nightclubs all over.

The first chapter is set in Peel Street, really an amalgamation of Peel Fresco, Orange Peel- venues I've performed at myself, because I've decided to write what I know the most about, so it's relatively easy. The setting goes a long way towards that.

I've got to average 2.5 - 3.5 k a day to make it by midnight December 30th

The first chapter involves a performance, where Jack's doing a bit of sleight of hand and 'mind-reading'

Jack knows actual magic. He's a naturally talented diviner who can read the future in the neon signs of Wanchai, or by watching tea leaves drift in ramen. There's a council that regulates the use of magic in Hong Kong, stomping on anybody who takes it too far so the majority of regular people never find out- so Jack's stuck in the little leagues. He lets out a smidgen of magic every now and then but otherwise keeps a low profile.

So there's magic. And bartenders that serve blood in Soho, investment banks that hire fortune tellers and TST drug peddlers who are a part of an ancient Hindu cult. If you buy a watch from an Indian in TST, you're actually wearing an arcane tracking device so someone can steal your PIN through the internet.

It's fun to write.
